Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Breeders

If you are thinking about buying a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy, you’ve already made an excellent decision. Cavaliers make incredible family Pets. But be warned, like most pure breeds, Cavaliers are prone to an array of health conditions. That is why you should always purchase a Puppy from a reliable, trusted and caring Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Breeder.

You may have considered visiting a local Pet Store. And I’m sure you’d find a cute and adorable Cavalier Puppy in some of them. That would certainly be the fastest way to get a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel puppy. However we would urge you to reconsider this option. There is a strong possibility that a Dog purchased from a Pet Store will have come from a Puppy Farm. The mass production of Dogs in horrific Puppy Mills is not only inhumane, it also helps to contribute to degenerative health conditions in the Breed.

Take a look at our handy guide below to ensure you and your family find a happy healthy puppy. Purchasing from a trusted, reliable and caring Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Breeder will ensure the continued health of the Breed. A good breeder will care for the Cavalier, be willing to health test their pups and be more than happy to answer any questions you have.

You may also want to seek a Kennel Club registered breeder who has produced consistently healthy Spaniels. While it is not yet mandatory for Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Breeders to health test their Pups, you’ll find that if a breeder is willing to do this, they are much more likely to be producing healthy puppies.

Step 2: Setting up a Visit with the Breeder

Before making a purchase choice you will need to visit the pups.

It is suggested that you set up a time to visit fairly soon after the litter is born.

If a litter is already half sold it would be better to wait. The truth is the best puppies are usually bought first. So it’s important you are one of the first people to visit the new litter.

In order to pick a good puppy you also need to see them interact with their litter. Not only can you see this at a breeders house, you can also observe the pup’s parents.

Step 3: What to ask your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Breeder

You should get as much information as you can from the breeder. A good breeder will have all the answers you need.

It is important to discuss the health of the litter. Along with the health of the litter, ask which litter this is for the mother. The best litter to buy would be her third litter from the same dad.

Ensure you see the mother and father if possible. In fact, we’d strongly advise against purchasing a puppy if the breeder cannot show you the parents. Puppy farmers often use families to distribute their puppies, if the pups parents cannot be seen, it’s possible that the breeder is in fact a puppy farm seller.

Get as much information about the parent’s health as well to see if there is anything hereditary. The important thing is to get as much information from the breeder as you can. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If the breeder is unwilling to answer them, walk away.

Step 4: Interacting with the Puppies

You must interact with a puppy before bringing them home. If possible, visit the breeder multiple times prior to taking the pup home.

It is very difficult to find the best fitting Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy if you do not visit the litter. You should start by observing the litter as a whole. Pay close attention to how they interact with one another. You want to look for one that has good energy but is not overly dominate.

You also don’t want to get a shy puppy if you don’t want one. Some owners want to get a shy puppy so they can break it out of its shell. That goes against how the puppy is. If it’s shy, it’s shy. There’s nothing wrong with a shy pup.

Instead of looking at the size of individual puppies, look at the size of the litter. The bigger the litter the healthier the pups. By looking at the whole litter you’ll be able to see every puppy’s personality. This important because you need to find one that fits you.

Step 5: Individual Inspection

After finding a puppy you seem to gel with, you should interact with it by itself.

Pick up the puppy, play with it, and hold it. Get to know the puppy. Let it be comfortable with you. Kneeling and sitting will help the puppy become comfortable with you.

Remember that fast movements may startle the puppy. As well as loud noises. So be gentle, slow and calm.

Once the puppy is comfortable with you and you feel that this puppy maybe the one, check the overall health of the puppy. Do a visual inspection first.

Some good basic checks include;

  • Look for any obvious health issues that you can see, the puppy should fairly round and not thin.
  • The puppy’s eyes should be clear and have no discharge or crust around it.
  • The pups ears should be clean and have little to no ear wax.
  • Teeth and gums should be clean, with no unpleasant odor.
  • There should be no pus or feces around the genital area.

Finally, do a vision and hearing test.

This can be done easily by clapping your hands and by throwing a ball.

The pup should react to the sound of you clapping your hands, and while they may not retreive the ball, they will likely play with it

Step 6: Taking the Puppy Home

Now that you’ve decided on a pup it’s time to take them home. There will more than likely be some time in between your visit and when you actually take the pup home.

Once you do get the puppy home it is important to bring your puppy to a vet within a few days.

Also you should not take the puppy for long visits until the pup is 12-16 weeks old.

By following this guide you’ll be able to pick the best Cavalier King Charles Spaniel for you and your family.

Having a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an amazing experience with the right dog. Don’t spoil that experience by taking short cuts when picking out a puppy.
