It is a question that is often asked, are Cavalier King Charles Spaniels loyal dogs?

Definitely!

It is thought that Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are one of the most loyal breeds of dog.

A loyal history

No other toy breed has such an illustrious history as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Even his rather grand name reveals a royal connection.

This playful little Spaniel used to be the preferred pooch of wealthy families in England and France centuries ago, owing to its desirable breed traits.

In fact, when King Charles I was executed his favorite Spaniel was, as ever, by his side.

A little about the breed

This popular pure-breed generally stands around 12 inches tall and weighs between 13-18 lbs.

It is graced with a moderately long silky coat in four recognized color patterns: Tricolor (black/white/tan), Blenheim (chestnut and white), Black and Tan, and Ruby.

The tail is not usually docked, and a distinctive feathering on the feet can be noted. To keep this breed looking great, a weekly brush is all that is required.

The Cavalier King Charles has a lifespan of around 10-12 years.

Loyalty has lead to increased popularity

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is currently the 6th most popular dog in the U.K and its popularity is on the rise in the U.S. too as it occupies 18th position.

An excellent companion

The breed is exceptionally affectionate and playful and is an ideal choice for households with children.

They have strong adaptability skills and will generally take very well to any lifestyle.

If you enjoy walking now and again, the Cavalier King Charles will happily accompany you. Equally, if you’re more of a couch lover he will curl up with without complaint.

This breed enjoys light to moderate play and does not need a lot of space to be happy.

It is this easy-going nature that makes this Spaniel ideal for the very young, very old or unwell owner.

The Cavalier King Charles will also get along well with most other dog breeds and will regard most strangers as friends. It is for this reason that this breed is not suitable for a guard dog role.

This breed can be known for enjoying a good chase, so keep him on a lead when around traffic to avoid accidents.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Loyal to the very end

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is noted as being devoted, loving and exceptionally loyal to its owners.

The breed makes an ideal choice as a lap-dog as it needs a lot of human interaction and affection to keep content. In return for your time and love, it will reward you with unfailing loyalty.

There has been a tragic real life example of this in recent years which demonstrates just how loyal this breed can be.

In 2013 Peggy Mangan, an elderly woman, passed away whilst out walking and her devoted Cavalier lay by her side for 4 days until she was found, himself passing away of a broken heart shortly after.

Whilst the above is an extreme example of the King Charles’ loyalty. It is agreed that this breed makes for a highly faithful companion. They will readily show lots of affection and seek to be around their owner as much as possible. Whether this involves playing, going for a walk or just snuggling up in front of the TV.
