Do Cavalier King Charles Spaniels Shed their fur?

Choosing a breed of dog that does not shed its fur can often be the make or break decision when it comes to selecting the right family pet.

If you or anyone in your household is allergic to dog hair, shed fur can cause serious problems. Unfortunately, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels Shed their fur.

Don’t choose a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel if you have allergies!

While the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an extraordinarily loving, well-tempered breed, one thing that can’t be changed is the fact that they shed their fur.

They have a silky, feathered coat which is one of the defining characteristics of the breed, however, this coat sheds a lot, thus you will find a considerable amount of hair on your furniture and clothing.

This shed fur will require a significant amount of housekeeping to keep on top of, but worse still can be a real issue for allergy sufferers.

Symptoms of being allergic to dog hair include but are not limited to:

– A runny nose

– Sneezing

– Coughing

– Watery, itchy red eyes

– In severe cases, skin rashes may even occur

I’m sure you’ll agree that none of the above are nice symptoms.

How to minimize the impact of Shedding

While you can never eliminate the shedding issue entirely, there are a couple of things you can do to reduce the amount of shedding and also stay on top of it:

Use a good quality dog brush

To keep the coat free of mats, you need to do regular combing and brushing. A good brush will go a long way, especially if you use it every day.

I’ve personally found this to be a very good choice and it’s not particularly expensive either:

Just look at all those reviews!

Keep your Dog well groomed

As well as brushing, you should keep your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel well groomed.

Not only will this help reduce shedding, but your loving companion will also look good while sitting on your lap or going out for a walk.

Invest in a good quality vacuum cleaner

There’s no getting away from the fact that you will need to vacuum on a regular basis.

You’ve probably already got a vacuum cleaner but one specifically designed for use with pet hair can make all the difference.

While not the cheapest, I find this to be an excellent choice:

Dyson DC50 Ball Compact Animal Upright Vacuum Cleaner, Iron/Purple – Corded

Why not consider choosing a cross breed?

Crossbred Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are becoming very popular. Unsurprisingly too, as what’s great about a crossbreed is that you can almost design the perfect dog.

If you cross a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a non-shedding breed such as a Toy Poodle, for example, you have a nonshedding, hypoallergenic Cavapoo!
